An electric fence (electric shepherd) is a lightweight wire fence to which high-voltage pulses are supplied from a special generator.

The wire rests on insulators attached to metal, plastic, wooden posts.

The fence is designed to protect pens and pastures of domestic farm animals and poultry, crops from damage caused by livestock and animals, and to prevent livestock from getting onto highways and into ravines.

The operating principle of the electric fence is a short-term shock from high voltage electric current when the animal comes into direct contact with the uninsulated wire of the fence.
